Cleansing data

Purpose

To create behaviour to remove unnecessary data, so that you can focus on the information you require; this process is known as cleansing data.

Theory

Cleansing data is a subset of transforming data, which is described in the next exercise.

In the Knowledge Model screen, a cleansed node is denoted by the following graphic .

In this exercise, you will define five pieces of information that you want to display about an entrant, and discard all the other data within that knowledge node. This differs from enriching data in that you can choose which output data is displayed.

Actions

To cleanse data:

  1. Open the Cleansing Data knowledge model.
  2. Double click on the Cleanse Entrants node.
  3. Click the Minimise Down button in the top left corner of the knowledge model, to minimise it.
  4. Ensure Deborah is selected from the Situation List.
The Conclusion pane is displayed and splits into two parts, with the input situation shown in the top pane and the output situation in the bottom pane.

Currently, there is no output situation data to display.
  5. In the Input pane, click on the ellipse between the Entrant and Passport concepts. This type of ellipse is known as a relation. If you hover the mouse over the relation, you will see the concepts to which it belongs.
  6. Drag and drop the relation to the Output pane.
  7. Ensure the Conclusion tab is selected.
The Output pane shows the Entrant and Passport concepts, linked by the relation.

There are grey lines between the concepts in the Input pane and the corresponding concepts in the Output pane.
  8. Click the OK button to accept the default justification.
  9. Drag and drop the following relations from the Input pane to the Output pane, as described in step 6:
    • has Cash Carried
    • has Date of Birth
    • has Gender
    • has Visa
When you have finished, the Output pane should have six concepts in it.
  10. Click the OK button to accept the default justifications.

You have now cleansed the Cleanse Entrants node so that it only displays the information shown in the Output pane, rather than all the information that is currently shown in the Input pane.
  11. Close the knowledge model without saving changes.
