Installing on a Unix or Linux environment

Purpose

To enable you to install the Erudine Behaviour Engine on to a Unix or Linux environment.

Theory

The Erudine Behaviour Engine is designed to operate on a variety of environments with a number of different database types. The instructions in this exercise will enable you to install the Erudine Behaviour Engine on to the following Unix/ Linux environments, although most Linux distribution installers are very similar:

As a prerequisite for installing and running the Erudine Behaviour Engine, Java 5 or above must be installed.

During the installation process, you may have to obtain a licence key via email in order to run the software; where this is the case, you will need Internet access to complete this exercise. You must also enter your root password, because the Erudine Behaviour Engine stores important files in the folder /var/erudineand therefore must be able to create and modify this directory.

It is recommended that all previous versions of the Erudine Behaviour Engine are uninstalled before beginning the installation process.

In this exercise, you will install the Erudine Behaviour Engine on to a Unix/Linux environment. You will then obtain a valid licence key, load it on to your machine and successfully run the Erudine Behaviour Engine.

Actions

To install the Erudine Behaviour Engine:

  1. Place the CD/USB stick into your machine.

  2. Start the installer by opening a command promptand typing the following command in the install directory: java -jar ./ErudineBehaviourEngineInstall.jar.

  3. Follow the instructions on screen, clicking Next after making each selection. During the installation, any of the following options may be selected:

    • At step 4 of the installer, you can change the installation path from the default by either typing in the required path or clicking the Browse button to find it.

    • At step 6 of the installer, you can install the Erudine Behaviour Engine without the supplied documentation or demos by un-checking the relevant check box.

    • At step 8 of the installer, you can define where the shortcuts are created, as well as defining whether the shortcuts will be available to all users or just the current user.

    • At step 9 of the installer, you can create an installation script for future use in a "silent install" by clicking the Generate an automatic installation script button. See Installing using an installation script (silent install) and a site licence for more details.

  4. When the software has successfully installed, click the Done button.

  5. Start the Erudine Behaviour Engine from the Applications menu, which will begin the licensing process.

The precise location of the shortcut will depend on the specific environment, but it will be created in the Erudine group by default.

  6. Go to Loading licences and complete steps 5 to 11.

  7. Close the Erudine Behaviour Engine.
